Privacy policy

Who this covers
This policy covers settling.karet.co.uk ("Settling"). Settling is a free tool that helps executors work through probate in England and Wales. It is not a law firm and does not file anything on your behalf.
What we collect
- Account details. When you sign up, Firebase Authentication stores your name, email address and (if you use a password) a securely hashed password. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your name and email with us.
- Estate and checklist data. The answers you give during setup, the steps you tick off, dates, and any estate accounts you enter are stored in our Firestore database, tied to your account.
- Analytics, if you accept cookies. If you accept analytics cookies, Firebase Analytics (built on Google Analytics) records how the app is used — pages visited, buttons used, device and browser type. This is anonymised where possible and is never linked to the answers you give about the estate. See "Cookies" below.
Why we collect it
Account and estate data exist to run the checklist for you and to let you pick up where you left off. Analytics data exists to see which parts of Settling are useful and which are confusing, so we can improve it. We do not sell any of this data, and we do not use it for advertising.
Who we share it with
Account and estate data is stored with Google Firebase (Authentication and Firestore), which processes it on our behalf under its own data processing terms. Analytics data, if you accept it, is processed by Google as part of Firebase Analytics / Google Analytics. We do not share your data with anyone else.
Cookies
Settling sets one essential cookie-equivalent (local storage) to keep you signed in and to remember your cookie choice — this is not optional, since the app cannot work without it.
If you accept analytics, Firebase Analytics sets cookies and similar identifiers in your browser to measure usage, as described above. These are not set until you accept, and you can withdraw acceptance at any time.
How long we keep it
Account and estate data is kept for as long as your account exists. Delete your account by contacting us and we will delete it, other than anything we are required by law to keep. Analytics data is retained by Google Analytics for up to 14 months.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask to see, correct, export or delete the personal data we hold about you, and you can object to or restrict our use of it. To do any of this, email settling@karet.co.uk. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) if you think we have got this wrong.
